Catalogue structure
Use this guide to understand how collection areas, main subject types, standard categories and object types fit together, and which specialist fields each object type adds to the item form.
1. Collection area
The broad field of the collection, such as Music, Technology or Natural History.
2. Main subject type
The kind of subject that best identifies the collection, such as Artist, Franchise, Country or Computer.
3. Standard category
A family of related item types, such as Printed material, Recorded music or Miniatures and scale models.
4. Object type
The precise format of an item. Selecting it activates the specialist fields listed below.
Every structured item also has the common catalogue fields, including title, condition, rarity, signed, sealed, one of a kind, purchase details, storage location, notes and images. Specialist fields are optional unless the form explicitly says otherwise.
Each area lists the Main subject types available when creating or editing a collection in that area.
